Sale of application forms for MBBS course

TIRUVARUR: Sale of applications for the MBBS course for the year 2010-11 commenced at the new Government Medical College here on Monday. The new medical college is to function from this year.

Collector M. Chandrasekaran inaugurated the sale of applications at the medical college office at the Collectorate complex. The Collector said that the cost of the application form was Rs. 500 for general students, Rs. 100 for special students like wards of freedom fighters, ex-servicemen, differently-abled candidates and it would be given free of cost for SC/ST students. SC/ST students should produce the necessary caste certificates as proof. Applications would be sold till May 31, on all days.

According to Sundar, Resident Medical Officer, 69 applications were sold on Monday and 63 applications on Tuesday. Indian Medical Council had given its approval for Tiruvarur Medical College recently.

An outpatient ward had started functioning from February this year at the new college complex. A 300-bed hospital was also functioning. Other college building works were nearing completion. Hundred seats was the allotment for the college. Tiruvarur Medical College was a boon to the rural students of that area. Tiruvarur had become a hub of higher education with a Government Medical College to function from this year, a Central University already functioning and Anna University's engineering college functioning at Thirukuvalai. State Government had allotted a sum of Rs. 100 crore for establishing the Medical College at Tiruvarur.

Sale of applications began at Thanjavur Medical College also on Monday. According to Ambujam, Medical Superintendent of the college, 599 applications had been sold in the past two days. A total of 393 applications were sold on Monday and 206 on Tuesday. Ambujam said that students applying for MBBS and BDS could apply in the same application. Applications would be sold on all days till May 31.
